In the land of luxury, Positano’s prices can be as steep as the winding roadways. But with enough planning, you can have a beautiful and relaxing stay that will leave you energized and refreshed with memories to last a lifetime!
Positano is absolutely worth at least a 2-night stay. Once the daytime travelers head back to their home bases, this is when the magic of the town truly reveals itself. Getting to Positano, Italy
From Naples, Italy - Wherever you are traveling from, Naples is more than likely the start of your journey to the Amalfi Coast and Positano. Car service or ferry are the 2 easiest ways to get to Positano, Italy.
By Car - booking a private transfer from either the Naples airport or train station to Positano is the quickest route at approximately 1 hour 15 minutes; 160€ for 2 people. You can be dropped off right in front of your hotel, which makes this option extremely convenient. I recommend GetTransfer.com or Joe Banana.
By Ferry - the ferry from Naples Beverello to Positano takes about 2 hours and costs between 15-35€ per person. The ferry dock in Positano is obviously at the base of the town. You will need to hire a Porter to bring your luggage up to your hotel; or you can attempt to navigate through the large crowds and upward climb with your belongings.
When to Visit
Many visit the Amalfi Coast for the beaches. Summertime allows for the best beach weather but also comes with sweltering heat and massive crowds. The posh lifestyle also comes with a matching STEEP price tag. Prepare to pay over 1000€ per night for hotel accommodations in July/August.
For less crowds and lower costs, visit Positano in spring or fall. Weather can be cooler with possibly some rain. But getting around and experiencing the town is much more enjoyable in April, May, September and October. Most of the town closes down from November to March.
Helpful Tips
Positano is one of the most desired locations in Italy. Accommodations/restaurants book up quickly. Book your hotel as soon as possible. It is highly recommended to make dinner reservations ahead of time, especially in peak season.
Walking is the best way to explore Positano. But be aware of how hilly the town is! The beach is at the bottom of the incline, so expect a lot of upward climbing and steps on the way back up. In general, Positano, Italy is not known for its frugality. The Amalfi Coast town is small but posh. There are plenty of hotel options in Positano, but they are typically smaller boutique hotels with fewer rooms. So they come at a hefty price tag, especially the spots with the best views. Plan for Positano to be one of, if not the priciest location in Italy. But it’s well-worth the splurge! Just be sure to book well-ahead of time as the most popular spots will book up quickly. Top Things to do in Positano
1.) Wander the narrow streets
Positano is a small town and while there are LOTS of hills and steps, it’s easy to find your way around. Head left or right out of your hotel and just browse through all the shops, cafes, and gelaterias. Make your way towards the church to head down to the beach. Wear comfortable shoes! Don’t stress over your shoe choice. Wear tennis shoes that have plenty of support, but still lightweight and well-broken in. Everyone all over Italy wears comfy walking shoes; both Italians and tourists!
2.) Visit Santa Maria Church
Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta is one of Positano’s oldest monuments, dating back to the 10th century. Centered in the heart of the town, its glistening dome can be seen from many spots around Positano and gives travelers a directional anchor from the winding paths. Besides the colorfully-tiled dome, the church’s exterior is relatively simple and reflects the classic Amalfi Coast architectural style. The Baroque interior, however, boasts several beautifully adorned altars, frescoes, and artworks. Be sure to step inside for some reflection and solitude. The square around the church has some great mosaics to discover. Grab a gelato and sit in the square and people watch for a bit before heading down to the beach level.
3.) Shop for ceramics, sundresses and handmade sandals
Lining the narrow streets are small but beautiful boutique shops. Positano is known for its colorful ceramics, light linen clothing, and sandals crafted just for you as you wait. My favorite souvenir from all of Italy is my olive oil bottle with a bright aqua blue and lemon pattern from Absolute Positano! You’ll see lots of donkey ceramics in the shops; all sizes from tiny to very large! Donkeys are cherished in the Amalfi coast for their ability to transport goods up and down the pathways (and some are still used today to manage moving workloads!). Grab a small donkey ceramic to bring home for some extra luck!
4.) Visit Valentì for a limoncello tasting
Definitely make a stop at Valentì Positano during your stay! They make their own limoncello, which is their main specialty. But they also have all kinds of other delicious lemon treats, from marmalade to lemon candies. They also produce their own pistachio and hazelnut cream…to die for! The best part?? They give you SO many free samples to try in the store! Seriously…you could almost make a meal of it! They are very passionate about their products and will give you a great price if purchasing a few items. Everything gets packaged up very nicely and secure for travel. They also offer very reasonable shipping to the U.S.
Need the perfect gift for a friend? They have beautifully hand-painted limoncello bottles for around 10€; pair it with a small jar of lemon marmalade for a delightful and colorful gift!
5.) Try lemon sorbet in a lemon
After walking around for a bit under the hot Positano sun, you’ll be craving the lemon sorbet! Trust your gut instinct!! The lemon sorbet is out of this world! With the mouthwatering blend of tart Amalfi lemon and just the right amount of sweetness, lemon sorbet is the perfect refreshing treat while strolling along the beach. Better yet - get your lemon sorbet served in an actual lemon! Collina Bakery is located in the center of town and there’s several spots on the way down to the beach. Go ahead - try a couple and find your fave!
6.) Hike the Path of the Gods
Ok, this one is not for the faint of heart! But for all you hikers out there, the Path of the Gods cannot be missed! The Path of the Gods, or "Sentiero degli Dei," is a stunning hiking trail near Positano on the Amalfi Coast. Starting in Bomerano and ending in Nocelle, this trail offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea, cliffs, and charming coastal villages. The hike features a mix of rocky paths and dirt tracks, winding through lush greenery and fragrant wildflowers. Along the way, you’ll encounter panoramic vistas, ancient shepherd’s huts, and a sense of serenity that makes the journey unforgettable. Ending in Nocelle, you can relax at a local café before heading back down to Positano.

8.) Take the ferry to Amalfi Town
The town of Amalfi is in close proxemity to Positano and well-worth a visit for a half day, but can be easily experienced in a few hours. The cheapest way to get to Amalfi from Positano is by taking the 25-minute ferry ride. Ferries run pretty regularly April through October, weather depending. Check the Ferry Schedule at positano.com for the most up-to-date schedules. Tickets can be purchased down by the dock to the right as you walk to the beach.

9.) Day trip to Ravello
Another amazing nearby town is Ravello. Consider a day trip to both Amalfi and Ravello, or just Ravello if you only have a couple hours.
Ravello is a charming hilltop town also on the Amalfi Coast, known for its stunning views, historic villas, and bright gardens. Perched high above the coastline, it offers panoramic vistas of the Mediterranean. Key attractions include Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, both featuring beautiful gardens and breathtaking terraces. For the more adventurous travelers, consider renting scooters to get around town! Be careful - the streets are curvy and narrow. But scooters can offer a fun and affordable way to get around town. Aperitivo is one of my favorite Italian traditions. It’s Italy’s version of America’s Happy Hour…and they know how to do it right! Aperitivo is offered earlier in the evenings, usually starting around 6pm. Many restaurants and bars offer a pre-dinner cocktail special, typically a spritz. With the purchase of the drink, there’s also usually a little snack to accompany it…some spots you’ll get bar nuts or small bites. Other spots may offer elaborate meat and cheese spreads. Make it a point to experience as many Aperitivos as possible in all the Italian towns you visit to try everyone’s take on them!

THE WINE SHOP POSITANO VINI E PANINI
The ladies at the Wine Shop deli will make your custom sandwich right in front of you, offering a huge selection of Italian meats, and fresh produce. Try a caprese panino with prosciutto! This shop also has cold beverages and a market featuring plenty of snacks to take with you, as well as a plentiful wine selection.
